On Thursday this week, EMC announced a definitive agreement to buy RSA Security.
I must admit, I was not surprised in the slightest that RSA has been bought. My only surprise has been the company that has bought them. From an identity management point of view, RSA recently took a major blow when Oracle purchased RSA’s strategic provisioning partner, Thor Technologies. Since then it was hard to see where RSA were going to go in this space.
I’m not sure what is going to happen to RSA’s product suite. SecurID used to be the defacto two-factor token of choice (from what I saw out in the field) but as cheaper alternative tokens were released by competitors, the demand for SecurID tokens seemed to start slowing down.
I think it will be very interesting to see in the coming months, what EMC do with the products that RSA have brought to the table.
